Scholarships Toward Environmental Sustainability

The purpose of Knick Knack Nook Re-Use It Store Society is to foster leadership in environmental sustainability through both action and education. To that end, a total of $25,000 will be awarded in 2016 to individuals with strong ties to Bowen who are pursuing learning opportunities in support of their capacity to advance environmental sustainability.

Scholarships for Students Pursuing Academic Studies

Deadline has been extended to Monday, June 26, 2017

Scholarship funding available in this category: $20,000

Scholarships in support of students proceeding to studies at a post-secondary level that clearly develop the capacity of this individual to advance environmental sustainability are offered.

Please note:

    1. Applications for this scholarship will be received up to and including June 26, 2017.
    2. Only applications using an electronic format will be considered.
    3. Preference will be given to applicants demonstrating strong ties to Bowen and those who have already shown a commitment to environmental issues. Though not the primary determining factor, financial need will be a consideration.

Please include the following in your application:

  • your full name, address, telephone number and email address
  • your connection to the Bowen Island community
  • a description of the course of study you intend to pursue
  • the ways in which this course of study will advance the Nook’s interest in environmental and/or social responsibility
  • your volunteer or other work that is related to community and/or environmental responsibility
  • your leadership experience in other settings
  • the way in which this financial award will make a difference in your ability to pursue this course of study
  • documentation providing proof of acceptance at a recognized Canadian post-secondary institution, including student number and the address of the institution
  • a letter of reference from someone other than a relative (Appropriate contact information for the reference must be included, and the Awards Committee may contact the reference.)
  • a copy of the applicant’s transcript of scholastic standing from the most recent year of attendance at a recognized educational institution

Scholarships in Support of Alternative Paths of Environmental Learning

Scholarship funding available in this category: $5,000

Scholarships in support of individuals pursuing alternative paths of learning that clearly develop their capacity to advance environmental sustainability are offered.

In order to present the scope of opportunity invited by this scholarship, the Awards Committee offers the following examples of learning programs that would be favourably considered in the awarding of scholarships in this category:

  • A young adult has been educated through home schooling and Island Discovery and now wishes to learn straw bale construction with a view to bringing that technology back to Bowen through offering community workshops and other kinds of mentoring.
  • A mature student wants to study permaculture in order to be more effective in developing and sustaining participation in community gardens on Bowen Island.
  • A person who has kept a few beehives on the island now wishes to develop their knowledge and experience of beekeeping with the intention of becoming an advocate for the expansion of beekeeping on Bowen at a time when there is concern about the diminishing number of bees available for pollination.
