Small Grants Program

Knick Knack Nook Re-Use It Store Society (KKN) has entered into an agreement with the Bowen Island Community Foundation (BICF) to help select the recipients of the Environmental Sustainability and Social Sustainability Small Grants. Two members of the KKN Board will join the BICF Grants Committee to consider applications and make recommendations to the KKN Board. Once accepted by the KKN Board, BICF will pay the grant monies to successful applicants on the KKN’s behalf.

For 2017 the KKN Board has approved $10,000 for Environmental Sustainability Grants and $10,000 for Social Sustainability Grants. Applications for these grants must be received by 5 p.m. on Monday, February 13, 2017.

If grant monies remain at the end of the March application round, the KKN may invite further applications in the fall of 2017.

Environmental Sustainability Grant

Applications are invited from the Bowen Island community for this program.

In 2017, Knick Knack Nook Re-Use It Store Society approved the amount of $10,000 to be distributed to Bowen Island initiatives that will contribute to the environmental sustainability of the community.

GRANT SELECTION CRITERIA (weighting shown in brackets)

  1. Project will contribute to the environmental responsibility of the community of Bowen and must include one or several aspects of the following goals:
    • principles of zero-waste
    • recycling
    • composting
    • food security
    • encouragement of minimal consumerism, and/or
    • education regarding any of these goals. (5)
  2. Project is supported by a network of volunteers who are prepared to do the work and can demonstrate their ability to accomplish their goals (3)
  3. Initiatives that create intergenerational linkages are of interest (2)

Social Sustainability Grant

Applications are invited from the Bowen Island community for this program.

In 2017, Knick Knack Nook Re-Use It Store Society approved the amount of $10,000 to be distributed to Bowen Island initiatives that will contribute to the social sustainability of the community.

GRANT SELECTION CRITERIA (weighting shown in brackets)

  1. Projects will contribute to the social sustainability of the community of Bowen through:
    • assistance to seniors
    • assistance to children, youth and families
    • encouragement of diversity and inclusiveness on Bowen
    • promotion of wellness and safety, and/or
    • education regarding any of these goals. (5)
  2. Project is supported by a network of volunteers who are prepared to do the work and can demonstrate their ability to accomplish their goals (3)
  3. Initiatives that create intergenerational linkages are of interest (2)

Some examples of KKN Community Grants in past years include:

  • Contributing to the solar panel installation at BICS
  • Contributing to the BICS Community Playground Upgrade
  • A bottle-filling station and water fountain at BICS for students and community
  • Bowen Heritage demonstration garden Improvements
  • A bottle-filling station and water fountain at BICS for students and community
  • The purchase of a higher capacity composter for the Montessori school Zero Waste Project
  • Garden and Farm School program operated at BICS
  • Tech Tutor program at the library that provides free computer assistance to all Bowen Islanders
  • “No Child Left Behind” program administered by Bowen’s Children’s Centre
  • Printing and mailing 2015 Parks & Trails Guide to Bowen residents
  • Befriending Program created by the Caring Circle Health & Wellness Society

Download and complete the Application Form. Send applications of no more than 500 words by email to the Bowen Island Community Foundation (grants@bowenfoundation.com). Print “KKN Small Grants Application” in the subject line. Short-listed applicants may be invited to meet with the Grants Committee to provide more detail and answer any questions.
