2019 Grants Awarded
The following are the applicants and recipients of the Sustainability Grants offered by the Knick Knack Nook for the year 2019
ENVIRONMENTAL SUSTAINABILITY
Bowen Island Conservancy, in their ongoing mission to instil a sense of environmental responsibility, will use this grant toward the cost of outdoor events and public education sessions which feature experts in topics related to the protection of the natural environment of Bowen Island. $1,000
Bowen Island Preservation Association intends to support three specific initiatives on the Island:
Bowen Island Food Sovereignty, a collaborative project of Bowen Agricultural Alliance and Bowen In Transition, out of their interest in a more resilient Bowen Island community, will support a collaborative, multi-stakeholder project outlining food system sustainability $5,000
Total Environmental Sustainability Awards: $11,500
SOCIAL SUSTAINABILITY
Bowen Island Arts Council is presenting a Syrian Art Exhibit through which they intend to help nurture connections, understanding, and empathy amongst Canadians and new immigrants $1,500
Bowen Island Children’s Centre is being awarded support for two projects:
Bowen Island Seniors Keeping Young
This grant toward room rent, exercise equipment, yoga leadership and public speakers will enable the Bowen Court Seniors housing complex to continue to foster health, emotional and physical well being in our island seniors. $3,800
Bowen Island Public Library
The structural beauty of the new Annie Laurie Wood Annex at the Library’s Cove Commons will now be enhanced by the provision of multi-use, comfortable, welcoming furnishings. $9,800
Bowen Island Disc Club
People of all ages will be delighted by the opportunity to go with friends and family to Bowen’s own Disc Golf Course! $3,000
Bowen Island Community School
The next stage in the ongoing development of the BICS playground is to make a more inclusive, accessible, social, and skill building playscape through blacktop painting, creation of a buddy bench and consultation with a landscape architect $6,300

- a weekly Bowen Agricultural Alliance Farmers Market at BICS
- new cultural, historic, celebratory and educational events in Davies Orchard including an Apple Blossom Festival, Canada Day Celebrations, a heritage tea house, a Maple Leaf contest and the Apple Harvest Fest
- Heritage Apple Education through apple grafting and the development of a plan for a Heritage Garden

- First, to continue the program originally called ‘No Child Left Behind’ which makes it possible for children who would benefit from additional support and accompaniment to attend camp
- and secondly, to support the provision of extracurricular activities through the school year for children with additional needs or financial barriers in total: $4,100
